Know Your Target Species

Before you head out to the water, make sure you know what species of fish you’re targeting. Different species of fish require different fishing techniques, so it pays to do your research. You can read about different fish species and see a selection of lures by clicking on the Shop by Species button below:

Choose the Right Gear

The right equipment can make all the difference when it comes to fishing. Make sure you have the right rod, reel, line, lures and baits for the target species.

Location, Location, Location

Knowing where to fish is key to success. Look for areas where the fish are likely to be, such as structures, weed beds or deeper water. Local knowledge is always the best when it comes to catching fish, so make sure you call in to the local bait and tackle shop, or have a chat with fishos out on the water to find out what is biting and where.

Time Your Trip

Timing is everything when it comes to fishing. Different species of fish feed at different times of the day, so make sure you’re out on the water at the right time. Check the tide times on weather websites, consider purchasing a Tide Times booklet that list bite times and read local fishing reports. You can read our Sunshine Coast Fishing Reports here.

Use the Right Bait

Different species of fish are attracted to different baits. Make sure you’re using the right kind of bait for the species you’re targeting.

Be Patient

Fishing takes patience. Don’t give up if you don’t get a bite right away. Keep trying different techniques and locations until you find the right spot.
