Sunshine Coast Fishing Report | Thursday 16 March 2023

Thursday 16 March 2023

Fishing conditions on the Sunshine Coast have been favorable over the last week, with warm weather and light winds resulting in some great catches. The coming weekend sees a high moving into the Tasman Sea from tomorrow, resulting in winds turning southeasterly over the weekend. Conditions should be prime prior to the southeasterly change on Saturday, with north to northwesterly winds around 10 knots and seas below 1m.

Offshore fishing in the Noosa area has been productive over the last week, with a range of species being caught including tusk fish, pearl perch, snapper, spotted and spanish mackerel, mack tuna, longtail tuna and cobia. Mooloolaba anglers have reported catches of Spanish mackerel, spotted mackerel, amberjack, pearl perch, Mahi Mahi, and black marlin. Those fishing offshore at Caloundra have been rewarded with good catches of snapper, pearl perch, tuskies, and grassy sweetlip. It's worth noting that the Spanish mackerel season ends on 21st of March, so anglers can look forward to more opportunities to target these fish.

For those looking to fish inshore, anglers have reported great catches of flathead and Mangrove Jack in the Noosa River, especially towards the lake and around rock walls and structures. Similarly, the Maroochy River has been a productive spot for flathead, bream and mangrove jack. We’ve also had reports of good catches of prawns in the higher reaches of the Maroochy River. The last hour or two of the run-in tide has seen big schools of herring coming through, with queenfish and GTs in hot pursuit. This provides a great opportunity to grab your cast net and catch some live bait to try your luck at targeting these predatory fish.
