Sunshine Coast Fishing Report | Thursday 21 September 2023

School holidays have kicked off and the Sunshine Coast has been a haven for family fishing adventures thanks to warm, sunny days and plenty of fish on the bite. It doesn’t look like it will last however, with wind and a shower or two forecasted for the coming week. Offshore looks like a no-go, so it looks like a good week to explore those sheltered estuaries and rivers.

Offshore Fishing

The Hards continue to be a hotspot, offering up a variety of species like Snapper, Tuskfish, Pearl Perch, Amberjack, and Kingfish. Mahi Mahi have also been spotted around the FADs. North Reef has also been fishing well, with Snapper, Pearl Perch, and Sweetlip making frequent appearances.

The warmer weather has activated the Bass population, making now an excellent time to introduce the young ones to freshwater fishing. Surface lures like frogs and poppers are proving effective, and you might even hook a Sooty Grunter or Yellowbelly. Keep an eye on our Bait Master Blog for our upcoming article on Bass fishing.

The passage is alive with Trevally schools chasing bait, and some lucky anglers have even snagged a Snapper or two. Summer Whiting and Flathead are also abundant. However, be cautious when using burley in the shipping channel; small sharks are making their presence known.

Catches of good sized Flathead and Sand Whiting continue to be reported at the mouth and in Woods Bay. The Tewantin stretch has also seen good sized Bream catches over the last week, with the odd Queenfish caught also. Zac also caught this nice sized Trevally on a Pro Lure Clone Prawn.

Maroochy River

Bream are still biting pretty much anywhere you can throw in a line, while consistent catches of Flathead continue around the mouths of Eudlo and Petrie Creeks, and the Bli Bli to Cod Hole stretch. The outgoing tide seems to be delivering a better bite, so aim to fish around that time. For those after crabs, good Sand Crabs have been

reported in the mid to lower reaches while Mud Crabs are about in good numbers in the mid to upper reaches. Whiting are also making a show around Twin Waters.
